In order to create oxidized bitumen 90/10, the BBU reactor at the refinery must first expose penetration-grade bitumen to hot air at a temperature that ranges anywhere from 240 to 270 degrees Celsius. Only then will the reactor be able to produce oxidised bitumen 90/10. Because of this, the refinery needs to maintain the temperature at a level that is constant and falls somewhere between 220 and 230 degrees Celsius. The reaction that takes place inside the reactor and involves the bitumen’s hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atoms of the air is induced by the heated air. The interaction of the bitumen with the air is what causes this reaction to take place.

The next thing that happens is that it starts to produce some steam, which, once it has been produced, needs to have the oxidation chamber emptied of it in order for it to continue operating properly. Once this steam has been produced, the next thing that happens is that it starts to produce some water vapor. Because of this, the presence of oxidized bitumen is brought about as a direct consequence of this.
