Processing Cheat-Sheet (bitumen, adhesives, compounding)

A) Polymer-Modified Bitumen (PMB)

  • SBS dosage (w/w on bitumen):

    • Road binders: 3–5 % starting point (optimize for climate & traffic).

    • Roofing membranes & bridges: 9–12 % for high elasticity, softening-point lift.

  • Architecture choice:

    • Radial → higher elastic recovery & rut resistance (R-series).

    • Linear → smoother processing, tack (L-series).

  • Typical process window:

    • Bitumen temp: 170–190 °C during high-shear incorporation.

    • Shear: 3000–6000 rpm rotor-stator (or equivalent) until gel fully develops.

    • Hold/maturation: 30–120 min at 160–180 °C, low shear.

  • Additives: antioxidants/anti-ageing as per spec; consider oil-extended RP 8361 to reduce viscosity at given modulus.

Tip: Use powder grades for fastest dissolution; crumb/granules for dust minimization. Maintain water-free conditions to prevent foaming.

B) Hot-Melt Adhesives & Sealants

  • Grade picks: L 7413 / L 7420 / L 7342 for clean color and balanced tack; RP 8361 when built-in oil extension is desired.

  • Softening point & viscosity control: combine SBS with hydrocarbon resins (C5/C9), plasticizing oils, and waxes.

  • Processing window: 160–180 °C (verify with resin/oil system).

  • Regulatory note: where needed, select silica-dusted variants to avoid stearate transfer.

C) Polymer/Plastic Modification & Footwear

  • Impact/elasticity boost: blend L-series SBS into PS, PP, or ABS (with compatibilizers as needed).

  • Footwear compounds: R 7372 and L 7420 deliver resilience and comfort; tailor Shore A with oil & filler.

Choosing Linear vs Radial: What Changes?

PropertyLinear SBS (L-series)Radial SBS (R-series)
Processing viscosityLower at equal molecular weight; easier calendering/extrusionHigher; may require slightly more temp or oil
Elastic recovery in PMBVery goodExcellent (preferred for rutting resistance)
Tack & adhesion (HMAs)High tack, smooth film formationGood tack; often needs tackifiers for HMA
Bitumen compatibilityExcellent with straight-run & many oxidized gradesExcellent; often gives higher softening point for equal loading

Packaging, Handling & Storage

  • Standard packs: 12/14 kg bags (powder), 800–1000 kg big bags (crumbs/granules) on pallets.

  • Dusting agents: Ca stearate, amorphous SiO₂, or Zn stearate options to minimize blocking and streamline feeding.

  • Storage: dry, covered, ≤ 40 °C, away from direct sun/precipitation.

  • Shelf life: 12 months from production date under recommended conditions.

  • Transportation: truck, container, or any standard mode compatible with non-dangerous goods elastomers.

FAQs

Q1: What SBS level should I start with in road PMB?
Start at 3.5–4.0% with R 30-00 or R 35-00, then adjust by climate and binder base. Target elastic recovery, softening point, and Jnr/SEJ results per your spec.

Q2: When should I choose oil-extended SBS?
Use RP 8361 (≈29–33% paraffin oil) to lower mixing viscosity and enhance tack for adhesives or soft PMB systems.

Q3: What if I need very smooth calendering for membranes?
Pick linear grades such as L 30-01A, L 7420, L 7417.

Q4: Do you provide TDS/SDS and REACH documentation?
Yes—PetroNaft supplies TDS/SDS and compliance documentation (including REACH-related data) on request for all stocked grades.
